challenge.
Virgin is one of the world’s most recognisable names but by 2024, its identity had become fragmented across entertainment, travel, finance, and lifestyle verticals. Market share and consideration were declining, cultural relevance was slipping, and competitors were outpacing Virgin with disruptive, focused propositions.

The challenge: create a unifying masterbrand strategy that reconnected Virgin to its audience and reignited what it stood for. In short? Make Virgin fun again.

role.

As lead of the research workstream, I was responsible for grounding the brand strategy in audience insights and cultural analysis where I:

  • Conducted qualitative interviews and ran quantitative analysis using proprietary tools to map audience perception and competitor positioning

  • Developed a comprehensive report analysing each one of Virgin's complex constellation of operating companies, their target audiences, performance and market positioning, as well as their interaction points

  • Examined Virgin’s roots in music, media, and cultural disruption, showing how its entertainment-first philosophy of fun could unify diverse verticals today, and identifying areas of the brand's history that could be resonate with their current and target audiences

  • Explored what “fun” meant in 2024, beyond surface-level entertainment, testing its resonance across sectors and audience groups and feasibility as a market positioning

  • Identified landmark insights that reframed Virgin’s role, not just as a service provider, but as a cultural icon with entertainment at its core

  • Co-developed the strategic narrative alongside the Head of Strategy, translating research into a unifying story that guided creative development

This was brand strategy in action: connecting business objectives, audience behaviour, and cultural meaning into a clear, differentiating framework that addressed a behemouth brand's biggest problem.

result.

  • Virgin’s leadership explicitly cited the strength of strategic insights as a deciding factor-an exceptionally rare outcome in high-stakes pitches.

  • Produced the insight foundation that guided creative and positioned Virgin not just as a service provider, but as a cultural icon with entertainment at its core.

  • Demonstrated the power of brand strategy grounded in audience insight, connecting cultural meaning with business imperatives to solve one of the most complex identity challenges in global branding.
